In Uganda most religious marriage wedding ceremonies are preceded with a customary marriage function. The tradition requires that the man brings gifts to the woman’s family as appreciation for her upbringing.
Leave alone the families that abuse the tradition by marring off their young daughter mainly to acquire the gifts. It is a function that joyfully brings together the families of both sides, brings respect and dignity to the couple and their families among their friends and the community they live in.
Cows and goats are some items one would not miss among the gifts taken to the woman's family. As the world moves on the list of items is growing day by day, … different food stuffs, money, household items … the other day a water tank to assist in harvesting rain water was one of the items received from the in-laws.

Hopefully, if the list becomes too long it will not discourage young men from practising this tradition…
